Bloody Petrel

Bloody Petrel

GOLD AWARD - 2025 Bird Photographer of the Year, Best Portrait

Make a bold statement with this award-winning portrait of a giant petrel, full of color, detail, and backstory about life as both a scavenger and predator in the unforgiving environment of the Southern Ocean.

Giant petrels are the scavengers of the Southern Ocean, often seen feeding on carrion. But they are also top predators, able to kill small penguins and other birds, especially those weakened by disease. This individual has its head stained red from a recent meal, a freshly deceased gentoo penguin. Although their feeding habits may seem gruesome, these birds play a vital role in the ecosystem by preventing the spread of diseases and shaping other bird populations. Despite their appearance, giant petrels are surprisingly devoted parents, with both males and females taking turns incubating their single egg and guarding their chick. Once heavily persecuted for their oil, their populations have rebounded thanks to conservation efforts, although they still face threats from fishing practices and climate change.

Paper and Printing

Each print is produced by ThePrintSpace, a studio widely relied upon by galleries, photographers, and art institutions for museum-level fine art printing. Their giclée workflow uses archival pigment inks and precise color management to achieve exceptional tonal accuracy and consistency.

This image is printed on Hahnemühle Pearl 285gsm. The Hahnemühle Pearl Giclee paper has a smooth orange peel texture and resin coating which creates a fibrous feel and satin-like finish. With a bright neutral white base, it creates natural black and white images and offers vibrant color reproduction. Combined, this great mixture of qualities give the image the feel of an oil painting.

Both the paper and inks are certified for long-term stability, ensuring your print preserves its integrity for decades. With production and shipping centers in both the U.S. and Europe, orders are fulfilled close to your location, delivering consistent quality and efficient global delivery.
